Read The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas by Ursula Le Guin.

https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/ursula-k-le-guin-the-ones-who-walk-away-from-omelas

In Le Guin's story, Omelas is presented as a city full of happiness whose inhabitants are intelligent and cultured. Everything about Omelas is pleasing, except for the secret of the city: the good fortune of Omelas requires that a single unfortunate child be kept in perpetual filth, darkness and misery, and that all the citizens should be told of this on coming of age.

After being exposed to the truth, most of the people of Omelas are initially shocked and disgusted, but are ultimately able to come to terms with the fact and resolve to live their lives in such a manner as to make the suffering of the unfortunate child worth it. However, a few of the citizens, young or old, silently walk away from the city, and no one knows where they go. The story ends with "The place they go towards is a place even less imaginable to us than the city of happiness. I cannot describe it at all. It is possible it does not exist. But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas."

You are a citizen of this hypothetical town: do you stay or do you go? Explain your answer and make your case. Provide reasons why you think that is the best (ie: the ‘most good’/’least evil’) choice for you.

Please submit by end of day on August 5. Please direct questions to Andrew.Muncaster@Humber.ca

Assessment

The assignment will be assessed as follows:

10 marks cover the presentation of your case. This presentation will lose marks if it is too brief, too general, too vague, or too ambiguous to be a clear case of the variety of moral considerations you are discussing. It will lose marks if it does not adequately explain your choice. It will also lose marks if it is far larger than what it needs to be to make the point you are making. You only have 500 words for this assignment, so choose your words wisely! You can use any course related or non-course related materials to help make your case to stay or go…

2.5 marks will be for grammar (syntax, sentence structure), usage (word choice), and mechanics (capitalization, punctuation, spelling). One or two minor errors will be overlooked, but you will lose marks for repeated errors and for errors that obscure meaning.

Personal pronouns are permitted (and even encouraged).

The writing assignment need not conform to any specific writing format. Just be as clear, direct, thorough, and accurate as you can be in your effort to complete the task.
