Topics: As with the other papers, no abortion papers or topics that are highly abstract or philosophical such as religion, happiness, etc. It must be a topic that can be argued and a solution proposed. Also avoid subjects that advocate prejudice, discrimination, or judgments about any individual or group. Select a different topic than the one used for your claim of fact paper. You may not use papers written for other classes.

 

Assignment:

Write a proposal to solve a problem/issue supporting a claim of policy. Your claim will argue that a problem needs to be solved, must be solved, or should be solved, and you will propose a solution to the problem. Remember that your credibility (ethos) is established in part by showing that you’ve done sufficient credible research and understand the issue. Keep the research recent—produced within the past 5 years. Use a variety of sources.

 

This assignment is quite different from a claim of value or fact argument. A claim of policy paper requires a different structure. See the handout about formatting a claim of policy or proposal paper. First you will have to establish a problem exists that needs to be solved. You will prove this through logos (facts, examples, statistics, expert statements). Your purpose in this paper is to prove a problem exists and to suggest a way to solve it. Your point of view on the subject is not the focus of the paper. Use mainly third person point of view.

 

You will want to draw your readers in with an interesting introduction that captures the reader’s interest and leaves them wanting to read on. The claim may be stated at the end of the introduction or in the section in which you establish a need to do something about the problem.

 

Since you’ll have much information to synthesize and present, you’ll need to be careful to keep your writing clear, organized, and focused. It’s important that you acknowledge and counter the opposing view, which may argue that there is no problem or that the solution won’t work or it’s not the best solution. You will use ethos, logos, and pathos to back your work.

 

In addition to establishing the problem and a need to do something about it, you will also suggest a solution. You may have to research possible solutions that will work or draw your own conclusion by examining existing facts.

 

The final piece of the argument is to justify the solution. Why is this the best way to solve the problem?

 

The conclusion: will sum up your argument, restate your claim or call for some action to be taken.
