AVAMAR Meeting Minutes Date: 5/4/2021 In Attendance: Andrew Borntreger Rachel Vega Cristina Suit Christopher Magtanong Darrell Kiley Jeremy Bell Edwin Ebai Summary: The team met with Andrew on 4 May 2021 at 10:00 AM to discuss the way forward with Avamar Assess Only support approval effort. The meeting started with an introduction of the team members and Andrew provided a brief overview on the Avamar application and how the application functions. The issue with why Avamar (which has been running for years on NIPR computers) now needs an Assess Only approval came because G6 requested through Nelson on 4 April 2021 that an Assess Only be performed on the application. To assist the team with understanding which approval process the AVAMAR application will take, there were some information that the team needed in order to provide the appreciate guidance and support. • Introduction o The meeting started at 10:00 AM with a brief introduction of the teams members. • AVAMAR Overview – Andrew Borntreger o Andrew provided an overview on AVAMAR and how the application functions • Assess Only purpose - Avamar o Avamar had been on NIPR machines and on a sand box with two control server backups for years. o On Thursday 4/29, G6 informed Nelson that an Assess Only needs to be performed on Avamar • Discussion o Darrell: Is this a software that is been using in house or something that we purchased a license for? o Andrew: We do not purchase the license for the software, you purchase license for the AVAMAR and it supports how many clients it can. o Darrell: Are there any custom codes designed with the software that we built in house or vendor purchased? o Andrew: This is all vendor provided code o Darrell: What documentation do we have for this software or is there none like general use, services within a host system, descriptions provided by the vendor o Andrew: Avamar works on port 28000 o Rachel: Has it been under Networthiness and has it been under an accredited system? o Andrew: There was a con for it and when it went away it went away o Rachel: Is this part of an accreditation or is this isolated to one boundary o Andrew: Only installed on nip on APG o Rachel: When did the con expire o Andrew: I do not know. o Rachel: Are we trying to get an approval to continue using over the command o Andrew: G6 wanted an approval to continue to use on our systems. AVAMAR is under dell users are losing their data because of this (network that he doesn't support losing data) this is important to get down. o Rachel: This team needs to get you good documentation so that we can get this approved. If this was going across the enterprise we would have to have an eMASS entry but we just need to partner with you to get the artifacts together. o Andrew: I do not have administrative access to get anything above user level/nipr. APGNEC would have that access, nelson has a sync meeting every two weeks. o Darrell: Is this a sand based solution? o Andrew: Yes, it’s just a bid dupe storage array o Darrell: Do you know who is hosting it? o Andrew: it’s in our server since G6 has never taken it, I have no access to the switch o Darrell: Is there any server based software that Avamar communicates to? o Andrew: It is a hardware appliance. G6 CIO was going to switch to one drive if this all fell through, many red flags installations, dependencies, not going to 7th command, integrated to accreditation environment. o Edwin: The team will assist you (Andrew) with the scans and forms completion and would reach out if we have any questions. • Action Items o Pre and Post ACAS/SCAP o STIG Checklist o Forms completion o Check APG NEC’s approval list for Avamar
