9.3 - Short Paper: US Airways Flight 1549 Revisited (PLG1)
Connect the module materials to the world around us and understand the role of system safety engineering.
For this assignment, you will write a short paper that relates the module materials to the event.
Your paper should be 2-3 pages long, not including references (a title page is not needed).
You will research an actual recent safety event by searching online and the Hunt Library for available literature and resources.
For this paper, please revisit the safety event from Module 1, which occurred on January 15, 2009.
US Airways Flight 1549, in the initial climb after takeoff from New York City's LaGuardia Airport, struck a flock of Canada geese and lost all engine power. Your short paper assignment should cover the concepts of safety-critical systems development and certification, including the affected airborne systems and associated assurance levels. This includes the hardware, software, and commands that have failed during the incident, and which are required to go through a re-design and certification process with the objective to eliminate the incident occurrence in the case of similar hazards.
Please use current APA format for the paper, citations, and references.
Review the rubric prior to submitting your assignment.
Save your assignment using a naming convention that includes your first and last name and the activity number (or description). Do not add punctuation or special characters.
Your paper will automatically be evaluated through Turnitin when you submit your assignment in this activity. Turnitin is a service that checks your work for improper citation or potential plagiarism by comparing it against a database of web pages, student papers, and articles from academic books and publications. Ensure that your work is entirely your own and that you have not plagiarized any material!
This activity supports Module Objectives 1-3 and Learning Outcome 10 & 11.
