Assignment 2
Projected Climate Data Analysis

Canadian statistically downscaled climate scenarios dataset is available on the Government's
website at https://climate-change.canada.ca/climate-data/#/downscaled-data. The downscaled
ensembles are based on output from twenty-four global climate models (GCM) under the
Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5). Temperature and precipitation data
are available at a 10km spatial resolution for three Representative Concentration Pathway
(RCP) scenarios over the period 1951-2100.
In this assignment, download monthly mean temperature and precipitation data (CSV file) for
your study area (as you selected for Assignment 1) for RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios
(future), and historical data from the website. Use the map and data extraction tool to select a
single location to represent your study area, and extract data for the specified date range,
variable, download format and other options. You can see the latitude and longitude of the
selected location by left clicking the pointer on the map to approximate your location. The
following tasks need to be performed for the assignment:

1. Compute monthly average temperature and precipitation over the 30-year periods,
2041-2070 and 2071-2100 for three different (RCP) scenarios.

2. Compute monthly average temperature and precipitation from the historical data for a
30-year reference period, 1976-2005; and compare these results with the values you
calculated in Assignment 1 for the period, 1981-2010.

3. Predict climate changes, particularly, changes in monthly average temperature (°C) and
precipitation (%) for two time periods, 2041-2070 and 2071-2100 with respect to the
reference period of 1976-2005 for RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios.

4. Present your results in tables and suitable graphs.

5. Provide a description of possible climate changes for your study area during the middle
(2041-2070) and end (2071-2100) of the current century based on different RCP
scenarios.
