3.2 Case Study: UAS Avionics and Flight Controls Analysis (PLG1)

In this activity, you will produce a written report analyzing three different cases of UAS avionics and flight control hardware/software.

As the reading material describes, avionics can be comprised of numerous components or integrated subsystems serving a function of vehicle operation. The category of UAS and its application can have a major impact on the architecture of the UAS.

For smaller UAS, it is common for commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) or open-hardware/open-software solutions to be used. An integrated UAS autopilot, such as those analyzed in Case #1 and Case #2 in this assignment, integrate and package many of the necessary avionic components into a single module with some additional peripheral avionics hardware.

For large and/or experimental UAS, the avionics system, including its flight control hardware, are often broken into several COTS and/or government off-the-shelf (GOTS) components integrated together. Case #3 in this assignment addresses such a system.

Below, each case is introduced, and a link is provided for system details. Questions are provided to serve as prompts as you analyze each case. Additional analysis prompts are given for you to compare the three cases.

Your introduction should summarize this report in 1-2 paragraphs. For each case, you should address the prompts above as well as any other insights made during your review of the reference or any additional referenced materials. Your conclusion should summarize your analysis and identify any lessons learned through comparison of the different types of avionic systems. You must cite and reference any external work including the links provided in the references section using the APA format.
