Assignment 1
Historical Climate Analysis
In order to assess impacts of climate change and adaptation, it is first to have information
about a reference or baseline period, which is used for predicting changes in future climate. The
World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) considers a 30-year period to describe the average
climatic conditions of a particular location.
In this assignment, obtain historical climate data for a study area (choose yourself) from the
Government of Canada's Website available at https://climate-change.canada.ca/climate-
data/#/. You have to analyze and visualize the climate data of a representative station for a
baseline period from 1981 to 2010. The following tasks need to be performed for the
assignment:
1. Create a climatograph showing monthly average temperature and precipitation for your
study area on a single graph. Make sure to provide the climate station name, ID and
location, including, latitude, longitude and elevation.
2. Plot monthly maximum and minimum average temperatures for 1981-2010.
3. Provide a graph of daily average temperatures, mean maximum temperatures and
extremes (highest high), daily mean minimum temperatures and extremes (lowest low)
for each date.
4. Create boxplots of monthly total precipitation data at the selected station over the
baseline period.
5. Describe the climate of your study area based on the analysis and the created graphs.
