GRADING Successful essays will provide a clear introduction to your outline, body paragraphs that identify and describe each of your main themes, drawing upon your own personal experiences and/or sources as examples, and a clear and logical conclusion that summarizes your outlook on diversity. Successful essays should be free from spelling or grammatical errors, should be clearly and succinctly written, and should not exceed 3 pages, double-spaced. "Reflections on Diversity" - Personal Diversity Statement Each student will write an original personal diversity statement. This statement will be a 3-page, double-spaced essay, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion, and will cite at least 3 sources from the assigned course texts. This project will serve as the culminating assignment for this course. As part of your final project, you are also required to review and provide written feedback on 3 other (randomly assigned) student final projects. There is no final exam for this course. ASSIGNMENT DETAILS • Write your diversity statement, including an introduction, body, and conclusion. • The body of your statement should discuss the main themes of your diversity philosophy. Each of these themes should be described in a brief sentence or two, including why you've selected this theme as representative of your diversity philosophy. • Your essay must contain at least 3 references from the assigned course texts (at least one must be from either the Oluo or Kendi books; the remaining two or more references may be from any of the TEDTalk speakers or articles listed in Canvas). • Your essay should discuss each of your themes by using personal experience and/or your sources as examples of why these themes are important to you, as well as how they will inform your approach to teaching. • Your introduction and conclusion should summarize how your themes are linked and/or work together to support your overall views of the importance of diversity. Your intro and/or concluding statement can also address what you learned -- and what you didn't learn (prior to taking this class) -- about diversity and the history of racism, and how you hope to change this for your future students.
