Professional Counselor Interview (20 points): Students will contact and interview a master’s level Professional Counselor (NOT a Social Worker, Psychologist, Marriage and Family Therapist, etc.) working in a counseling setting (mentally ill, substance abuse, children’s services, criminal offenders, minority groups, private practices, etc.).

Locating an Interviewee: According to the American Counseling Association (2012), there are over 80,000 professional counselors working in the U.S. Students should utilize information and references contained in the course textbook to locate one of these counselors to interview for this assignment. Another way to consider this task is to ask yourself, “if I were a client who wanted to see a professional counselor, how would I go about locating one?”

Possible interview questions are listed below, but should not be confined to this format - please add additional questions tailored to your own interests. Turn in a minimum 1,000 word summary of your interview (not a word for word transcription). This report should include your mode of contact with the professional counselor, the type of counseling program they attended (Community/Clinical Mental Health, School, Career, etc.), the results of the interview, what you learned, and your overall impressions as they pertain to your development as a professional counselor. The final paragraph should be a personal reflection about this experience. 

Possible Interview Questions:

1. Please describe your current position.
2. How long have you been working as a professional counselor?
3. Are you working primarily as a school counselor, mental health counselor, marriage and family counselor, or other?
4. What do you like best about your job?
5. What do you like least about your job?
6. What are the job requirements?
7. What have been some of the changes you have recognized in the counseling profession over your career?
8. What is your counseling theoretical orientation?
9. Are you currently a member of any counseling organizations?
10. Are there any credentials or certifications you would recommend getting?
11. What areas do you feel your graduate program didn’t prepare you for?
12. What suggestions would you have for someone entering the profession?
13. Ask what interests you: What else do YOU want to know about your future work as a counselor?
