1. Main arguments: identify at least two. Pay attention to key words such as, “I argue,” “this article argues,” “this chapter examines,” “this book shows.” Usually stated early
in the piece. It is the main conclusion that the author draws after analyzing their evidence.

2. Asummary or overview of historical events: describe at least one historical moment portrayed in piece. Describe the who-what-where-when-why.

3. Primary sources: identify at least 2 primary sources used in the piece. How were they used by the author?

4. Historiographical interventions: what is author saying other authors and scholars have said about this topic? In what way is the author contributed something new?

5. Methodology: How did the author conduct their research? (hint: review footnotes). How did they conduct their analysis? How did they structure their article? What about
their writing style? These are all issues related to methodology.

6. Theoretical tools, frameworks, and lenses: Are there any theories the author uses, perhaps theories, frameworks, or lenses borrowed from other authors? Does the
author offer their own theory or framework? Although theoretical tools and frameworks are often related to the argument or the author’s main point, they tend to be broader
tools that can be applied to other historical moments or scenarios.
