Final Report for Apollo Residence Hall Network Design Project

For this final report, you are role playing a company that is presenting its network design proposal for the Apollo Residence Hall. In Chs7-10, you have already prepared diagrams for particular aspects of the network.

In this Final Report, (where the first page is a Summary with the final Network image) put all of those pieces together in a seamless proposal that includes the following:

  1. Letter to the Manager of the Apollo Residence Hall that briefly describes the proposal.
  2. Feasibility Analysis (using the details in the textbook about the Apollo Residence Hall)
  • Network scope-Is it all local, within one campus, or does it extend beyond campus? What type of network, what topology, why?
  • Objectives of the network-Why is it necessary/a good thing for students?
  • How many users will be using the network? Intended Users and Number of Users- it will not always be possible to specify the number of users accurately, but an approximation can be arrived at by studying the business environment.
  • Data types to be served by the network—Word docs, graphics, voice and video?
  • Transmission Speed Requirements, What are the bandwidth requirements? - bandwidth determines how much data can be moved around the network in a given time frame. If large amounts of data need to be transferred on a frequent basis, the bandwidth requirements are likely to be high.
  • How reliable does the network have to be? - consider the possible consequences of network failure. What will happen, for example, if the network is down for several hours, or perhaps days?
  • Load Variation Estimates-times of day, days of the week when usage will be heaviest
  • Reliability and Security Requirements

Note for III.-VI. below:

Cost/Benefit Analysis for your designs. For each of your designs in III.-VI., provide a cost-benefit chart that compares various alternatives in terms of the cost of components, equipment, etc. Specify the products in your design and provide their cost and the total cost of the network. There are two options for specifying products. Option 1 is to use the generic LAN equipment list in Figure 7-20. Option 2 is to use CDW (www.cdw.com) to find LAN equipment. If you use CDW, you must use only Cisco devices (to ensure quality). You used CISCO

  1. Lucid Chart Apollo Residence Hall LAN/WLAN Design-include your figure from Ch7 and the rationale for your LAN design. (you already used the packet tracer and Visio)
  2. Apollo Residence Hall Backbone to connect local area network to the campus core. Include your figure from Ch8 and your rationale for your choice of backbone (switch backbone, router backbone, VLAN backbone or a combination).
  3. Apollo Residence Hall WAN to connect the residence hall LAN and the Data Center to other universities. Include your figure from Ch9 and your rationale for your choice of WAN design (lease line or switch line).
  4.  Apollo Residence Hall Internet and Internet Circuits as Backup Support to the outside. Include your figure from Ch10 and your rationale for your choice of circuit design.

P.S. Please check one more time the AP controllers in LAN in chapter 7, add the end user (Client computer or Servers) in your images, and explain when you are using switches (why?), VLANs (why?) routers (why?) .
