The Internet Knows All (100 points)

 

Assignment: Write a short essay about your observations and thoughts on 3 chosen works of art by an artist of your choosing. Present the examples/works of art in a PowerPoint presentation and submit along with your essay.

 

1. Research-Choose one visual artist that you find interesting. Use google, or another search engine, to search for 21^st century visual artists (alive and working). Using three different websites find information about your chosen visual artist. Download at least 3 examples of their work. Feel free to explore options from the textbook as well.

 

2. Essay- Write an essay that explains why you like the work, information that you have learned about the artist and their technique and discuss whether the work has a social/political/cultural/historical or other personal meaning.  This essay is not meant to be a biography. I am more interested in why you are attracted to the work and what you personally think it is about and what you derive from it. The written portion must be between 250-500 words, which is about ½-1 page single spaced.

 

Required Sources:  Three URL addresses must be cited at the end of the essay on a Works Cited page

 

3. PowerPoint- Do not place your selected images in the body of your essay, they must be presented in a separate PowerPoint.

 

Be sure to:

-clearly state your controlling idea

-organize and develop your explanation effectively

-choose your words carefully

-use correct spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar and sentences

-save your paper as a word document, file type should read .doc or .docx

-PowerPoints can be saved & uploaded as PDF’s, either a PP or PDF file type is fine

 

Formatting your Essay:

- about 1pg, equal to ~250-500 words of Single Spaced writing in the body of your essay

-use standard MLA format, (google if needed), outside of single spacing, please single space not double

-times Font, 12 point, single spaced, default margins. 

-essay formatting example loaded in folder

-be sure to include parenthetical references when necessary, changing a few words in a sentence does not make the idea your own. This applies to information from your textbook, online sources and any other resources you are using. 

-Include a works sited page

 

Watch out for these-Most Common Writing Mistakes:

#1-Using the same words to start paragraphs & sentences, like “the, they, next…”avoid this, use variety for the flow of your essays.

#2-Header/Cover page font size, check standard sizes for your text on formal essays like these.

#3-not using paragraphs! submitting paper with one block of text. Formal essays use multiple paragraphs to organize information.

 

A few more…

-did not adhere to the stated length: 5-15 points.

-formatting errors: 1-10 points.

-grammatical and word usage errors: 5-25 points.

-no or lack of parenthetical references: 5-25 points.

-no Works Cited page: 5-15 points.

-points will be deducted if you do not adhere to the stated length of the written assignment.
