The annotated bibliography requires you to have read your sources (the 5 you selected for the working bibliography) and chosen at least three sources that you plan to use in your research paper. An annotated bibliography will help you "weigh the potential usefulness of sources and document your search efforts" (The Little Seagull Handbook 74).

Sometimes students want to cut and paste large parts of a source without fully understanding how that long quote works in the argument they are making.

With this in mind, learning how to paraphrase long quoted material or create a blended quote in place of the long quote helps new writers to research papers practice these skills before writing the research paper.

We will practice long quotes (4 or more complete lines), but you will NOT need any long quotes in your research paper because a general guide is that commentary about quoted material should be as long to 1.5 times as long. That means for a quote of 4 complete lines, your commentary about the quote would be 4 to 6 lines, roughly. This would make your paragraphs too long for the length of the research paper.

The annotated bibliography will follow the example posted, but please note the following: each quote/paraphrase/summary needs in-text (parenthetical) citation.

Each source needs the following for the annotated bibliography:

Citation
Summary (Needs in-text citation)
Evaluation (Needs in-text citation)
Long quote (Needs in-text citation)
Paraphrase (Needs in-text citation)
Blended Quote (Needs in-text citation) (This is what most of you have been using.)
Please note that a long quote needs 4 or more complete lines; otherwise, it is not considered a long quote and will not need the same offset indention format. Use MLA format throughout the assignment.

Use MLA format, including header, heading, font, size, margins, and citations.

Use ONLY third person for the annotated bibliography and the upcoming research paper.

This assignment can take more time than you expect as you are reading your sources and determining what is useful to your essay. Be sure to begin it early and work diligently all week.
