You are required to investigate a range of common uses for spreadsheets and complete a spreadsheet project to show that you can apply what you have learnt to a fictitious problem.  The problem may be in a business context or in relation to an interest or hobby.  You will be required to demonstrate your ability to design implement and modify a spreadsheet.

The spreadsheet should contain at least 20 rows of data to include both character and numeric types, at least one main heading, column/row headings, at least two different alignments and a range of cell formats e.g. currency, percent, decimal, minimal of 3 worksheets named appropriately.

Note that you need to include the following:

  • Use of nested and / or compound If Statement
  • Use of Marcos
  • Use of text, database or Lookup functions
  • Use of Chart or Pivot table
  • Use of statistical and financial or mathematical functions
  • Use of date and time functions
  • Use of absolute and relative cell referencing / ranges
  • Use of comments and/or importing data
  • Use of linking and / or importing data
  • Use of advanced filter
  • Use of outlines
  • Use of scenarios and scenario reports
  • Use of sorting on multiple columns/ rows
  • Use of change of variable

Assessment Criteria:

  1. Design (30 marks)

  • Investigate a range of common uses for spreadsheets
  • Describe the aim of the project with aims clearly described
  • Design a capture form
  • Design the spreadsheet, data capture form and screen layout well designed to include accurate detail
  • Specifications for input data, processing and output
  • Include a range of cell formats and alignments
  • Specify formulae and functions used for processing
  • Description of the proposed macro
  • Describe how filtering will be used
  • Specification of the proposed graph
  • Description of how the filtering will be used in the assignment

  1. Implementation (25 marks)
  • Spreadsheet with appropriate data
  • Accurate data, labels and formatting
  • Accurate application of function and formulae
  • Chart and Marco clearly identified
  • Variable change clearly demonstrated
  • Four versions of spreadsheet accurately saved in your folder and printed.
  • Entire spreadsheet: project.xls
  • Spreadsheet with formulae: projectformulae.xls
  • Spreadsheet after recalculation: projectvariablechange.xls
  • Spreadsheet showing the use of filtering: projectfilter.xls

  1. Proposed Modifications (5 marks)

Suggest at least two modifications or improvements to the original design.  Suggestions might include advanced features such as the use of a look up table, spreadsheet protection.  Modifications should be clearly explained and resulting improvements described in detail using examples where appropriate.

The assignment should be typed; the printouts should be included and soft versions of all files supplied.  The project should also be submitted on Moodle.  As always, you are required to retain a soft copy of all files.
