This essay is a critique of as a dissertation titled, Transit-Oriented Development and Gentrification: A Case Study examining the cultural effects on a historically Black neighborhood in Denver, Colorado. This dissertation was authored by Gene L. Duran’s dissertation (2019) from Ashford University.  The author conducted their research as a single case stud utilizing purposive sampling to recruit study participants for interviews who were community members in the Five Points neighborhood prior to the introduction of the first rail line. There were 12 study participants interviewed which enabled the author to establish what cultural changes occurred in the Five Points neighborhood because of transit-oriented development which resulted in gentrification as well as helped with identifying appropriate support, and human services professionals provided in terms of support as a result of the cultural changes.

The Genene appears to have captured the essence of her research questions with an in-depth knowledge and use of the principles of a single case study. A case study is defined as:

Genene’s dissertation was methodical and clear when defining terms as well as her introduction to her study. The author’s conceptual framework was clearly articulated and clearly connected the literature on Trans-oriental development and its connection to gentrification. Additionally, the writer was able to notice gaps in the literature based upon her conceptual framework, internal colonialism theory. This theory was critical to the comprehension and synthesizing interrelated components of her study.
