Methodology The methodology that will be used during this research is Quantitative methods. Quantitative will be used due to its reliability and objectiveness. It is also able to demonstrate the
cause and effect of the variables in numbers. Data collect should be able to prove the given
hypothesis or the null hypothesis. Quantitative is very important to use for its extant
measurement of the variables it will involve questions to Park University students. These
individuals could provide the necessary critical thinking about control versus deterrence. The
questionnaire will focus on the issues and studies of gun control effectiveness in deterring
criminals or if there is room for stricter gun laws. The Likert-Style survey will be to better
measure the effects of the dependent variable in relations to the independent variable and will be
self-administered.
Procedures/ Participants in the study
Each Park University Student between the ages of 21 and 60 will been given the survey. The
survey will be used to obtain an honest assessment of how effective the criminal justice system is
when it comes to dealing with gun control laws and regulations. The survey method was selected
as the research-gathering tool because it is one of the most acceptable designs in gathering
research studies. The participants will be recruited through Park University and my Criminal
Justice 450 class. The survey will list ten questions and each question offers each participant
with three answer options to choose from and the answers chosen should be based on their
opinion.
Once the surveys are completed by each Park University participant, the answers will
then be analyzed, and the data will be measured. The data will be measured by adding up the
numerical value of each chosen answer and then dividing that sum by the total number of
respondents. Once that portion of mathematics has been completed, the average number that is
acquired will determine whether the hypothesis is supported or not. An average of one signifies a
completely supported hypothesis and an average of six signifies that the hypothesis was not
supported at all. The statistical method that will be used for this research is quantitative method.
Hypothesis: Criminal Justice students at Park University will support that gun control and
regulations are not effective for both criminals and law-abiding citizens
Null Hypothesis: Criminal Justice students at Park University support that gun control laws are
effective deterrent for both criminals and law-abiding citizens.
Independent and Dependent Variable
The independent variable of this research is gun control and regulations is that the dependent
variable is deterrent. This research is to show how effective gun control laws are from preventing
criminals from owning and able to obtain firearms. In the nation today or even when the first
control laws were instituted to be an effective deterrence process can only be possible by the
strength of the laws. Evaluation of the deterrence truly depends if there are no loopholes in the
gun control laws; which will create a disadvantage therefore exasperating of gun control. I will
be using Park University criminal students who are males and females ranging in age from 21-60
years old for my survey efforts.
Operationalization of the variables
The two variables in this study namely the independent and dependent variable will be
tested to either prove or disapprove the hypothesis. To measure the variables a preferred
demographics for this research will be Park University Students, who are males and females
ranging in age from 21 to 60 years old. Each person on list will be emailed a survey. Once the list
has been obtained, the survey will be emailed out to every person. They will either respond or
not respond by completing the survey questions. The method that will be used for retrieving the
information needed will be through a survey of ten questions asking random students who might
own guns or not. Those who respond will be randomly selected. During this process no one will
be able to determine which individual will respond, and which will not.
Population
The sample size is Criminal Justice 450 class. The sampling procedure that will be used for
research will be random sampling that is described as ‘sample drawn in which a random process
is used to select units from a population” (Neuman, 2009). There are two critical needs for using
random samples;
1. They are purely mechanical or mathematical without human involvement
2. They allow us to calculate the probability of outcomes with great precision, (Neuman, 2009).
Survey Instrument
Question #1 is to establish the gender and question #2 attempts to establish the race. Question # 3
asks participants if background checks are important for all gun buyers. Question # 4 asks if
participants privately possess a gun or does somebody else in their house does? Qquestion # 5
asks participants if they think that gun control laws serve as a deterrent or not? Question # 6 asks
participants if they think that gun control laws are effective in preventing criminals from
obtaining guns. Question # 7 asks participants if they think that the federal government should be
allowed to grant stricter gun control laws. Question # 8 asks participants if they think that
conceal carry laws can also be a deterrent. Question # 9 asks participants if they think gun
buyers should be given a psychic evaluation before they are authorized to own a gun. Question
#10 asks participants if the federal government should be able to establish a national firearms
registry. Asking all the above questions will assist to answer the research question of finding out
Running head: GUN CONTROL AND REGULATIONS 25
for sure how effective or ineffective gun control laws are in this country from those who are
studying the criminal justice system of this country.
Expected Outcome
The expectations for this study could reveal that there is a division among the people of
this country on the issue of gun control. The survey of the sample population of Park University
students could show a split data. The assumption is that half of the respondent could be
passionate about their 2nd Amendment rights; and wants the federal government to stay away
from taking away their rights to bear arms. While the other half of the respondents are probably
angry about all the mass shooting in schools, workplaces and many places that are family
oriented. This split could be reasonable and reflects the ongoing issue with gun control in
America.
All the checks and balances that have been implemented over the years since the creation
of gun control laws shows how effective they are in combination in deterring criminals from
owning guns or guns being owned by people with mental health issues. Even though not 100%
effective, it is better to have the laws in place because it establishes the standard that all gun
owners must abide by. One of the gun control law states that: Non-combatant to include trapper
should not able to purchase military-grade weapon, (Should more Gun control, 2017). This
means that civilians are not allowed to own weapons that they are not trained or qualified to use.
Such weapons are manufactured for militia purposes only and that should be viewed in that
manner. The law serves a deterrent against hunters who are law abiding citizens.
