MODULE 1: HEALTH CARE POLICY BRIEF ASSIGNMENT
Purpose: This assignment will assist you in framing a personal Health Care Policy agenda that can inform the development of your final assignment. It is strongly recommended that you identify a specific legislative health policy topic of interest that you would like to focus on for the remainder of the course and one that will build towards your final interview paper with an elected official.
Directions:
1. Statement of the Issue/Problem: Briefly describe the health policy issue of interest to you. Who is affected and how are they affected? What is the problem that this policy brief addresses? Who is your target audience for this brief? What was your rationale for selecting this issue?
2. Background: Provide an explanation of the problem and its significance with supporting data about the issue. Include impact of the issue on cost, access, and quality of care.
3. Responses and Policy options: What has been done (or proposed) about the issue. Include relevant information for example current laws needing to be changed, current debate about the issue. Have other organizations addressed it? Are there pending legislative or regulatory proposals?
4. Recommendations: Depending on the issue list recommendations about what different actors should do—e.g., Congress, state legislatures, relevant government agencies, health systems leaders, other nursing organizations, etc.
