there are a few short questions about some subjects linked to political lying

Philosophy

there are a few short questions about some subjects linked to political lying. one part is the support documents to find examples and definitions of the different concepts in order to answer the questions on the worksheet. the other part is the worksheet paper with the questions and the blanks there are to fill. answers must not be too long (10-15 lines are enough)

WORKSHEET ON POLITICAL LYING

You are welcome to work in groups but you must submit this individually. These will be graded check plus, check, check minus so you do not need to worry about getting the answers right so long as it is evident from what you write that you have read the text carefully and answered completely. More words do not make the answer better. It is possible to be concise and to the point. If you are someone who needs more time to finish, you may post your worksheet before midnight.

1. Thus far in this class we have come across a few distinct but related concepts, namely LYING, DECEPTION, AND DISSIMULATION (the latter was a subject of our reading for today).  What is meant by these terms and how are they distinct?  For each term that you define here, please provide an example of what you mean from at least one of the texts we have read so far.

2. Do you think the concept of deception is relevant to Plato’s allegory of the cave? Why or why not?  Does “deception” describe the predicament of the chained people in that metaphor or do we need another word, or concept, to articulate their circumstances?

3. In light of Plato’s cave allegory, how would you characterize the education of the guardians and founding myths of this model polis or Kallipolis (i.e. the beautiful city).  Are the guardians in the cave? If so, are they being educated to leave it? How about other people?

4.  To what degree does Machiavelli recommend (a) outright lying (b) deception and (c) dissimulation?  Please refer to both The Prince and The Discourses in your answer.

5. What is prudenza ?
