30 appointments to get my mouth fixed!” I exclaimed in shock after I was shown an x-ray result of my teeth, and what I needed to correct the defects shown by the X-ray. It all started when I visited a dental clinic for a routine cleaning of my teeth. The doctor had just commended my clean teeth; but after he suggested I did an x-ray for my teeth; the results showed otherwise. From the results, I needed to fill my teeth, do root canals for 5 teeth as well as crowns and 2 oral surgeries for having impacted wisdom teeth. When I saw the treatments and surgeries that I needed to do, I was both shocked and surprised because everything seemed normal before I visited the dental office; and I did not feel any form of pain or discomfort. But with the help of the dentist, I was able to identify underlying problems with my teeth that could have deteriorated into something worse, and I was guided on the right path to tackling these problems accurately. This experience served as my first inkling of the indispensable role played by dentists in the wellbeing of people, and it piqued my interest in the dental field. In addition to the establishment of my interest in the dental field, I got to see how important it is to visit the dentist for check ups routinely to prevent avertable problems from escalating into dangerous situations. In hindsight, I knew I was only able to know about the underlying problems in my teeth because I had the means to afford quality dental care, but there is a large amount of underserved people in our communities struggling to meet their basic needs; and to this people, a routine dental check-up would be the least of their worries despite the benefits that comes with it. This experience opened my eyes to the need for everyone to have unreserved access to quality healthcare services, and also inculcated a strong desire in me to propagate dental care to the underserved in my community. The blend of my exposure to the dental field, and my desire to establish myself in a career where I would be opportune to impact the lives of the underserved in our community extensively, has constantly served as pure motivation for me to pursue a career in the dental field, and I have perpetually taken conscious steps to make this goal a reality. In my quest to be a dentist, the first step I took was shadowing a dentist in the 40/30 clinic. This step was a unique one as it provided me with unique opportunities to understand the intricacies involved in caring for dental patients. I was exposed to the different tools needed in effective dental care, and I was responsible for preparing dental trays for dental surgeons in the clinic; while I watched the dentist perform a large spectrum of dental procedures on patients combining care, love and knowledge to put smiles to the faces of the patients. Coupled with this, I also showed for xrays and handled emergency situations effectively; and in some cases, I helped the dentists in the clinic to interview patients, examine them physically, order tests and suggest appropriate treatment plans under supervision. The combination of my personal experience with dentists, my exposure to the dental field, and my goal to build a career rooted in catering for the underserved in our community transformed my interest in the dental field to a burning desire. Another step I took towards actualizing my goal in this field was completing my OSHA training at UCSD, and I am currently working on completing my Bachelor’s degree in Biology at SDSU. Going through these different forms of training has helped me evolve into an intellectual individual with an analytical mind, which allows me to enjoy the challenge of tackling complex problems. Furthermore, I have grown into an approachable, light hearted, yet dedicated, competent and driven individual. I am sure that these attributes will not only make me a suitable candidate for the dental program in your institution, but also help me build an impactful career in dentistry, and I am thrilled at the prospect of honing my skills and capabilities at this dental program in your institution. The combination of the different steps I have taken thus far has helped me see the importance of effective dental care in the lives of people, and expose me to the importance of a dentist in fostering a healthy lifestyle, and I am motivated to take the next best step in line with my goal by joining this dental program. At the completion of the program, I intend to engage in training that will acuminate my skills in this field, and prepare me for a remarkable career in dentistry where I will literally bring smiles to the face of the underserved in our community.
