So, today I want to talk about what an ASL interpreter does, their impact on people, and most importantly, why I am thankful for them. It is even more harder in ASL because we focus so much more than the words. We focus on body language, facial expressions, etc. Through ASL, we are creating something so beautiful that cannot be compared to English. For this speech today, I have to sit down with my interpreter and make sure everything is working out ok. That is how tricky ASL can be. 1. “ASL is its own language, not a visual representation of English” as mentioned on the Interpreters Unlimited website. 2. ASL has its own vocabulary, grammar and culture, just like any other language. ASL interpreters have to be fluent in two separate languages - English and ASL. Main Point, Sub-Point, Sub-Sub-Point B. There are four characteristics the best ASL interpreters have according to Interpreters Unlimited. 1. Passion - they have to be passionate in what they do because Demonstrate the difference between English and ASL Deaf people can see if they are passionate to sign. 2. Excellent Communicators - ASL interpreters have to do more than just sign, they have to be skilled in body language and facial expressions so they can fully interpret our message loud and clear in English. 3. Ethical - ASL interpreters have to be ethical when it comes to interpreting. They have to be confidential and follow the Code of Ethics that is set by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. 4. Experienced - It takes practice to be skilled in ASL. It takes years for interpreters to be an expert in signing and they have to be open minded because some words in ASL have different signs. They have to adapt their signing skills however their client wants. II. According to Sophia Waterfield, a writer for Newsweek, there are over 1 million people who use ASL as their main way to communicate. Like me, many of them know the impact ASL interpreters have on us. A. For a second, imagine yourself not being able to go to doctor’s offices, important meetings, entertainment events or so much more because it is inaccessible. That is what would happen if we didn’t have ASL interpreters. B. Not many Deaf people are fluent in English because ASL is their first language. That’s where ASL interpreters come in to Eye contact play a huge part in helping us understand everything through our language. C. One of my favorite quotes, “No one has ever become poor by giving.” by Anne Frank perfectly describes ASL interpreters for me. For me, if there’s one thing I learned about ASL interpreters, it is that they give me more than they should. They give me memories, laughter, and a forever relationship with them even if they are just an interpreter. (Introduce the occasion) Maya Angelou would not be the person she was known to be without the trials of her childhood. A. Dr. Angelou suffered from sexual trauma that changed her life forever. 1. Through the words of Maya Angelou in a talk show interview with Oprah she stated, ‘I had been raped when I was seven and a half.” B. She also explained in that interview that when she found out her rapist was kicked to death after she told on him she though her voice could kill and went mute for years. Transition (Insert Transition Here) I discussed Dr. Angelou’s past and will now discuss the work she did. II. (The importance of the occasion) Dr. Angelou was many things but one of the most memorable things she was, was a writer. A. Dr. Angelou writing talents were emphasized greatly in the many poems she wrote. An example is a book called poems for young people. Show Slide B. Dr.Angelou inspired many others by writing memoirs about her life story. A well known book she published in 1969 about her life was called ‘I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings’ which contains her childhood including her traumatic past.
