Nature offers many examples of specialization and collaboration

Nursing Jan 24, 2022

Nature offers many examples of specialization and collaboration. Ant colonies and bee hives are but two examples of nature’s sophisticated organizations. Each thrives because their members specialize by tasks, divide labor, and collaborate to ensure food, safety, and general well-being of the colony or hive.

Of course, humans don’t fare too badly in this regard either. And healthcare is a great example. As specialists in the collection, access, and application of data, nurse informaticists collaborate with specialists on a regular basis to ensure that appropriate data is available to make decisions and take actions to ensure the general well-being of patients.

In this Discussion, you will reflect on your own observations of and/or experiences with informaticist collaboration. You will also propose strategies for how these collaborative experiences might be improved.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and reflect on the evolution of nursing informatics from a science to a nursing specialty.
  • Consider your experiences with nurse Informaticists or technology specialists within your healthcare organization.

BY DAY 3 OF WEEK 3

Post a description of experiences or observations about how nurse informaticists and/or data or technology specialists interact with other professionals within your healthcare organization. Suggest at least one strategy on how these interactions might be improved. Be specific and provide examples. Then, explain the impact you believe the continued evolution of nursing informatics as a specialty and/or the continued emergence of new technologies might have on professional interactions.

Nursing Informatics

Collaboration is a practice embraced in numerous practicums of management, application, and life aspects.  The practice is believed to simplify processes in life, thereby giving them an assumed nature of the order. The nursing practicum applies the principle of collaboration effectively in information management. Information management in the sphere is a fundamental principle for effective and efficient patient care. These prospects are not only deemed significant in application but also in management practices. Electric management of this nursing information has allowed for a revolution in patient care since information is simply accessed and keyed from all departments (McGonagall & Mistrial, 2017). Before the inception of computer technology, health records used to be maintained under pen and paper notations, though hampered with unending challenges.

An evolution in the health sector got incorporated where health records are electronically maintained. Significant patient information examples of records, data, imaging, and faxing can easily be accessed from a single unit. For instance, multiple auxiliary teams can access the laboratory results in the management and care of a particular patient. When the information is keyed in the system, it is accessible to all legitimate personnel. Specialists working in data informatics and the nursing care profession have held a special communication methodology. These departments are deemed to propagate unique means of communication between them to allow for proper coordination between them. As observed, the communications and continuous interactions between the parties are significant since these collaborative informatics systems are subject to changes since they are systems running on programmed software. These software's require regular updates, therefore the need for constant communication.

For instance, I had a recent experience with the unit of informatics in sterling general, where they were updating their systems. However, the practice was an unjust decision since the team ignored notifying other departments, hence a temporary system failure in the whole institution. The other departments were in tension since they had n insights into the traditional methodology of care where paper and pen are applied. This jeopardized nature of health care offered that day since significant data was enclosed in the system. This deems it significant to share all explicit knowledge regarding the health care practices since all practitioners are not vested with equal knowledge (McGonagall & Mistrial, 2017). Communication criteria between the parties can be relatively improved through training programs and further improvement of these informatics systems to incorporate the personal handles of each practitioner (Sipes, 2016). When nurses get trained to operate with the systems, they gain relevant knowledge that is significant in practice.

As the world is embracing a global transition in technological advancement, so is the health sector. Health care and informatics have embraced an evolution in computers that aims to make medical aid and interventions effective and efficient. The advancement in technology with healthcare informatics will allow for a simplified medical care advent. Moreover, the upgrades will also allow for time conservation, the practice of safety mechanisms in healthcare, and ease of sharing information across variant disciplines to pursue patient care. Visions regarding health care in informatics deem light regarding technological advancements encompassed on E- delivery systems. “The guiding principles of EBCD design were established to ensure that the final product enhanced and supported the process of patient care documentation, such as strict adherence to the style guide for consistency and alignment with the previously defined ideal workflows.” (Moiser, 2019 p 77). The systems developed shall also allow nursing leadership executives to organize, incorporate and possess aligning to the nursing informatics solutions (Moisier, 2019). He further suggested that using the developed strategies can pave the way for nursing leadership to guide and influence future solutions.
