Week 7

         For this discussion, I watched the video on the subject of surgical sutures. One of the most frequent medical devices used by surgeons during operations is a surgical suture. After surgery or an accident, the suture aids in binding bodily tissues together. The use of a needle and a connecting thread is all that is required to apply a suture. Due to that, I consider that this video is very informative for all the nurses, especially those who work in the surgical room.

         The video is divided into multiple educative parts. One of the things which I learned during my watch was the fact that there is a multitude of sutures, each used for different circumstances. In addition, the video also taught me about the difference between two medical terms: stitching and sutures. The first one is the action of actually closing the wound, while the other one is the line of material that is used for this process. In addition, it states the classification of sutures as absorbable and non-absorbable and then mentions which ones are synthetic and natural. Another new information I learned is that the longer an absorbable suture takes to absorb, the more likely it is to cause a foreign body response in a wound. All those tips and tricks provided in the video actually give me a better understanding of what kind of suture I should use in each situation.
