The prevalence of social media has had a huge impact on society in the area of how we tend to relate to each other and on what is considered to be normal in general. Taking a look at the ways in which social media changes attitudes and "norms" makes for an interesting study, and one that is applicable to understanding how society is slowly changing over time. For this assignment, you will first conduct your own research on the effects of social media on societal norms (Part 1), then you will examine what has been found through previous research conducted by others (Part 2).
Part 1:Compare and contrast the attitudes of two cohorts of people; one that consists of five people that rarely use social media and one cohort of five people that uses social media 2 or more hours a day.
Create a list of five people that you know that use social media at least 2 or more hours per day. This group of people will make up your first cohort. Then create a list of five people that you know that either do not use social media or use it very rarely. Take into account age when creating the cohorts, and try to keep the ages as similar as possible between the cohorts. Keeping a certain level of consistency in the two cohorts will help to negate the potential effects of generational differences. Provide a brief description of each of the ten people you are going to interview divided into their respective cohorts.
In other words, list the five people in the social media at least 2 or more hours a day, and provide a brief description of each along with why you chose them. Then provide a list of the five people that rarely or never use social media, and provide a brief description of each along with why you chose them.
Interview the participants to learn the similarities and differences between the two cohorts as it relates to attitudes, lifestyles, and relationships. Write a two-page paper comparing and contrasting what you learned about the two cohorts. Be sure to relate your findings to cultivation theory and socialization theory in the paper.
Part 2:Now you will compare your research with research findings through previous research conducted by others. Look up at least 3 articles in the Rasmussen Library that relate to the topic of social media and its impact on society. You are not limited to articles that are strictly written on the specific topic of social media and norms. Articles that are covering social media and society are available from a wide number of angles. After studying these articles, write a two-page paper on what you learned on the topic of social media and its potential impact on societal attitudes, customs, and norms.
Social media and norms
Part 1
The use of social media has become prevalent in the 21st century. Many people have subscribed to social media given to the internet connectivity in many parts of the world. The impacts of social media use on the norms have been a controversial issue of discussion for a long time. It is essential to understand the effect by evaluating the people in the society. The study involved two cohorts, with one that uses social media for more than 2hours a day while the other does not use social media. The first group involved five youths between 20 and 24 years who use social media at a high rate. The first cohort that uses social media consists of John 23, Jane 26, Smith 28, Kane 21, and Mary 24. The second cohort also involved youths between the same ages in eliminating age disparity that might affect attitudes towards the social media influenced by the generation. The second cohort that rarely uses social media involves Ben 27, Joy 25, Joe 29, Grace 23, and George 28. John is a university student who has been very influential on social media on issues of activism. I chose John due to his essential role in helping seek human rights. Jane and smith are bankers working in the same banks and have been role models to the youths through motivation on social media. Kane and Marty are also university students who are influential in engaging youths in high school. Ben and Joy are both subordinate workers in Walmart supermarket and are always against the use of social media. Joe, Grace, and George and casual workers in a factory in New York have also been against social media, claiming that it promotes immorality in society.
The response for the two cohorts indicated a significant difference in terms of understanding and social interactions. The similarity between the members of the two cohorts was that they were all from the same age group. The two cohorts were both youths who are active in society. However, the two groups exhibited differences in attitudes, relationships, and lifestyles. The cohort that uses social media illustrated a positive attitude towards different life issues. They were more optimistic compared to the cohort that does not use social media. In terms of lifestyle, social media users depicted a good and digital lifestyle in terms of eating, clothing, and other life issues compared to those who did not use social media. In terms of relationships, social media users depicted a more positive attitude toward other people in society. They embraced the diversity of ideas and appreciating people from different locations and cultures. The difference reflects the cultivation and socialization theory that the interaction in society tends to influence how people conduct themselves. Cultivation and socialization theory explain that interaction with people influences how people associate in the society (Trufanov, 2018). The users of the social media depict a difference in the manner in which they interact and associate with each other.
Part 2
Social media has been a topic of focus for many authors in society. The social media impact on society is an issue that has attracted many scholars to invest in investigating its impact. The use of social media has been highlighted to exhibit both positive and negative effects in society. Social media has led to many positive results that have helped to improve society in various ways. The use of social media has helped to enhance communication issues in society. Social media has facilitated accessible communication between individuals even when they are living far much apart in society (Zhong, 2018). It has revolutionized how people influence each other towards a positive change in society. The communication between people in different countries is attributed to the effective use of social media. Social media has reduced the barrier worries that are based on geographical differences.
Social media has also been attributed to influencing cultural diversity in society. Social media influences the perception of other cultures through interacting on social media pages, helping to understand each other (Raman, 2018). It helps to ensure diversity appreciation in society which is essential in promoting a better community. Cultural diversity has been an issue that has been very important to society and has been criticized due to the increase in racial discrimination that has prevailed in the community. Social media has become the solution to discrimination in society since people have interacted with each other and learned about different cultures on social media.
Social media has also been cited for having a positive influence on the education sector. At the onset of globalization, education has become an essential pillar that helps create a good education environment (Raman, 2018). Education is a crucial pillar that helps to promote equality and eliminate differences that might be prevailing. Social media has helped foster an excellent environment for students to communicate with their people in different classes. It allows professors to post important information on student progress and courses that enable students to learn and hold discussions. It has also assisted international students in communicating with their parents, hence aiding in emotional support. Social media is also an essential pillar in helping to promote a conducive environment, especially during the pandemic when students have been required to stay at home.
The other important issue that social media has influenced positively is the business world. The use of social media has become very fundamental in the business world (Zhong, 2018). Many businesses in the world have turned to the use of social media in marketing as a winning strategy in the market. Social media marketing has helped influence the market in a significant manner. More customers are becoming linked with social media in their shopping activities. Social media marketing has become a booming revolution in the business sector.
Despite the many advantages, some disadvantages have continued to prevail in society linked to social media use. The main negative impact associated with social media use is the moral decay in society (Majeed, 2021). Social media use has led to immorality in the community. The youths have joined groups involved in immoral activities such as gangs, prostitution, and other destructive societal issues, thanks to social media usage. The gangs formed on social media have continued to increase over the recent few years. Immorality and crime is the most criticized issue that is related to social media in the society.
The research has indicated that social media has positively and negatively influenced society, and it is essential to ensure that the positive impacts are leveraged to promote a good society. The positive effects of social media have remained crucial in the promotion of a good society. It is also essential to focus on eliminating the negative impacts on society. People need to focus on positive factors and ignore the negatives that have continued to prevail.
