Final Project Case Analysis Template

OVERVIEW

A case study is an in-depth exploration of a person, group of people, or business unit. Researchers may use case studies to understand how people succeed or fail, how problems are solved, or how business objectives are met. You will complete and defend a case study as the capstone project of your DBA degree.

This course has introduced some of the skills you will need when you complete your capstone project; you have begun practicing and building these skills by completing the activities in each module. Now, you will apply your skills to a case analysis that encompasses the first steps of case study methodology.

STUDY MATERIALS

  • Chapter 1: Getting Started How to Know Whether and When to Use the Case Study as a Research Method, in Case Study Research and Applications: Design and Methods
  • Chapter 2: Designing Case Studies Identifying Your Case(s) and Establishing the Logic of Your Case Study, in Case Study Research and Applications: Design and Methods
  • Chapter 4: Collecting Case Study Evidence, in Case Study Research and Applications: Design and Methods

INSTRUCTIONS

This template contains three sections. Be sure to fill out each section completely. Follow the directions and be clear and concise in your answers. Think through each part and refer to the appropriate sections of your textbook, Case Study Research and Applications: Design and Methods, to help you frame your responses.

Section 1: Project or Problem for the Case Study

First, choose a subject, project, or problem for the focus of your case study. Example:

Subject: Expansion of a service

Project: Rollout of a new hiring process

Problem: Declining sales

The subject, project, or problem can come from your past or current work experience.

In order to complete a case study, you need results to share, so your focus should be on a subject, project, or problem where decisions were made that you can identify to fit the content of this course. Remember, the focus you select must have decisions that you can evaluate. This is often the most difficult part of the case study.

Next, use the chart below to complete this section.

  • Define the who, what, where, when, why, and how of the project or problem that you want to focus on for this practice case study. Who are you focusing on in this study? What problem was solved and what decisions needed to be made? Where was this problem located (e.g., human resources, finance, operations)? When was the time frame? Why is this a useful case to study?

  • Articulate specific questions related to the who, what, where, when, why, and how that you would like answered. This chart should help narrow the focus of your actual case study. In the questions column, define what type of questions you would want to answer related to each area.

Section 2: Purpose Statement for the Case Study

Using your responses in Section 1, create a clear purpose statement for this case study. You may also consider this the thesis statement. Essentially, what do you want to learn, explore, and understand when you have completed the case study? [minimum 1 paragraph; maximum 1 page]

Section 3: Data Plan for the Case Study

Based on your responses in Sections 1 and 2, provide a data plan. What data will you review/analyze to meet the purpose of the case study? The data types could include interviews, documents, project reports, among others. This is often a difficult part of the planning stage but is crucial to being able to complete a good case study. Fill out the table below. Use three to five data types.
