Counselor Dispositional Expectations Dispositions are the values, commitments, and professional ethics that influence behaviors toward others, and, if sincerely held, dispositions lead to actions and patterns of professional conduct. The Grand Canyon University Counseling Program’s dispositions adhere to the University’s mission statement, as well as to the established counseling profession codes of ethics. The Grand Canyon University Counseling Program have adopted the following dispositions for its students derived from the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics. Although these dispositions are not all inclusive, they do represent values and qualities that are warranted by counseling students. Students who fail to adhere to or demonstrate such dispositions may be subject to disciplinary actions. • Psychological Fitness: Counselors* are aware and assess their motives for pursuing the counseling profession. They are aware of their unfinished emotional and/or mental health issues, and resolve them before starting to provide counseling services to others. Counselors engage in self-care and seek resolutions to issues that arise during their practice. Counselors adhere to the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics and/or the NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals Code of Ethics. • Self-Awareness: Counselors are aware of their personal moral, ethical, and value systems and provide counseling services with objectivity, justice, fidelity, veracity, and benevolence. Counselors are acutely aware of their personal limitations in providing services, and are willing to refer clients to another provider when necessary. • Cultural Diversity: Counselors respect, engage, honor, and embrace diversity and a multicultural approach that supports the worth, dignity, potential, and uniqueness of people within their social and cultural context. Counselors promote self-advocacy and assist clients in advocating for empowerment within their cultural context. • Acceptance: Counselors foster a healthy climate of change by providing and promoting acceptance, and a nonjudgmental environment during the therapeutic process. They understand their personal value system and do not impose their values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors on their clients. • Empathy: Counselors foster understanding, compassion, and avoid any actions that can cause harm to a client. Counselors treat others with dignity and respect. • Genuineness: Counselors deal truthfully with themselves and their clients, in order to avoid harming their clients. © 2015. All Rights Reserved. • Flexibility: Counselors practice a client-centered approach, and align treatment to the client’s goals for therapy. • Patience: Counselors understand the therapeutic process and respect client’s efforts to gain control over their lives. Counselors encourage an environment that promotes selfempowerment and allows client’s voice in the therapeutic process. • Amiability: Counselors do not support or engage in any act of discrimination against a prospective, current, or former client. Counselors promote and practice social justice and do not exploit others in their professional relationships. • Professional Identity: Counselors adhere to regulatory state boards and nationally recognized codes of ethics. Counselors practice only within their scope and competencies. They seek to utilize best practices and empirically supported treatments. 1. Acceptance |
The fundamental element of acceptance in counselling is being non-judgmental to others (GCU, 2015). My ability to support clients without judging them helps alleviate the stigma associated with special conditions, identities, and viewpoints among other elements of diversity (Klauser and Steinebach, 2019). By understanding that patients’ beliefs, values and behaviors should not necessarily match mine is a good starting point for acceptance. It is thus a critical determinant of how well I uphold diversity in the profession and one that fosters a good relationship between a counselor and a client. |

2. Empathy |
The ability to express an understanding of what a client may be going through and also showing them respect is vital in counseling (GCU, 2015). Elliott et al. (2018) state that it helps connecting the counselor with their client emotionally. I look at this disposition as an inherent characteristic that I possess as opposed to one that I have had to learn. Whereas it is an important attribute in a therapy session with a client. It is also quite useful in daily life interactions with others. Therefore, it is a matter of applying it professionally while interacting with a client. |

3. Genuineness |
Genuineness entails being truthful to avoid harm (GCU, 2015). I view genuineness as an element of both diligence and dignity. This disposition may come off as a contrast to acceptance because it entails telling the truth. However, in counselling, genuineness is applied when a counselor is protecting the client from any harm. It is imperative to inform the client when their situation requires close attention and not in a way that makes them feel awful about who they are and their role in society. |

1. Patience |
Patience is one area in which I need to do a lot to strengthen my counseling skills. Patience entails willing to move at the client’s pace and also handle personal emotions such as anger, annoyance and restlessness (GCU, 2015). The ability to allow the client to set the pace is the most significant element of this disposition that I need to improve. My preliminary plan to improve on patience is to improve on my listening skills. This entails allowing the client to express themselves fully before I can offer a rejoinder. |

2. Self-Awareness |
Self-awareness entails having an understanding of what one stands for in matters such as ethics, and values (GCU, 2015). It is not entirely a setback for my ability to practice but on many occasions, I fail to take into account my limitations in my quest to help clients out of empathy. On many occasions, I am biased to believe that I am the person best suited to help a client. To address this issue, I will be performing regular self-reflection activities such asking myself questions and even writing them down then answering. This will help me understand where I stand on major aspects of the profession. |
