STAT8123/7123 STATISTICAL GRAPHICS Session 2 2020 Week 2 Practical In the practical this week please work on Portfolio Item 1 (PF 1). Instructions for PF 1 are given below. Portfolio Item 1 Please select one historical graph by any well-known (e.g. Playfair, Minard, Nightingale) or less-well-known name in historic graphics. Do not choose one of the graphs we have already looked at including the Michael Friendly talk, readings, Michael Friendly papers and lecture notes. I would encourage you to try to find a graph that is less likely to be ‘known’. The graphic you choose must have first been published before 1900. Prepare a PowerPoint presentation about the graphic and its historical background. There should be at most two slides. The first slide should include the historic graphic and must also include the source of the graphic (title of the article, authors, source including title, page number, URL etc.). The second slide should answer the following three questions: What is the historic background of this graphic? Why is this historic graph important? What information is being conveyed by this historic graph? Each slide must have your name and Student ID on it. You will receive a mark of 0 out of 5 for Portfolio Item 1 if you use a graphic from the lecture notes or readings or Michael Friendly talk in this unit. You will receive a mark of 0 out of 5 for Portfolio Item 1 if the graphic you choose was not first published before 1900.
