CPS 470/570 Assignment 5

Enable ICMP Echo Request/Reply

You may turn off the entire Firewall and antivirus (and then restart your computer) when test your tracert program. Your program should receive all router information along the path from your computer to a destination. Open cmd window and use the “tracert” tool to help you debug your program. Wireshark is also needed when you debug your program. After finish testing, you should turn on firewall and antivirus (to protect your computer).

Alternatively, instead of turn off the entire firewall, you can enable ICMP echo request/reply on your computer. See below for instructions.

  1. Go to Control Panel, System and Security, and then Windows Firewall. Click “Advanced settings”, which will open “Windows Firewall with Advanced Security”. On the left, click “Inbound Rules”. On the right, click “New Rule …”

You will see the window “New Inbound”:

Click “Rule Type” and then “Custom.” Click Next. Choose “All programs.” Click Next:

Choose “ICMPv4” as protocol type and click “Customize…”

Choose “All ICMP types.” (In future, you can play with it – choose specific ICMP types.)

Click OK. For the rest of steps, choose the default settings. Give a name to your new rule, e.g., “ICMPv4 Inbound rule.” Click Finish.

  1. Follow the same procedure to add Outbound Rules/New Rule… to enable ICMPv4 messages:

After add new rules, you must restart your computer. Then test your program.
