Watson’s Theory Concepts

Watson’s Theory of Caring is similar to the concept of nursing theory postulated by Florence Nightingale of the Environmental Theory. It emphasizes that the unsanitary conditions that pose health hazards need to be monitored and regulated by nurses to ensure sustainable environmental conditions to help a patient recover. Watson’s theory of caring has four concepts that it relies on to inform the nurses on the best practices to practicing to ensure they offer medical services that will facilitate the recovery process of patients. The concepts are a human being, health, environment/society, and nursing (Pajnkihar et al., 2017). The environmental concept within Watson’s Theory is similar to Florence Nightingale’s Environmental Theory. Both agree to five components of the environment that lead to a healthy and sustainable niche for patients to allow them to recover. They are ventilation, light, warmth, effluvia, and noise, which influences the human response to allow the sick to adapt and overcome their illnesses. The theories are similar since they agree that external factors influence can hinder, suppress or contribute to the death or disease infection by a patient.

On the other hand, the theories are different since Florence Nightingale’s Environmental Theory is based on the environmental factors that influence the recovery process, while Watson theory is comparing the environmental factors with other components around a person’s life, which will lead to their recovery. Watson’s theory is anchored on four concepts: human beings, health, environment/society, and nursing, which are interconnected to ensure that a patient can relate with all the issues to have the best services rendered by the nurses (Pajnkihar et al., 2017). A nurse applying Watson’s Theory in their practice need to combine it with evidence-based methods to ensure they can offer well-researched practices which will facilitate the healing process of a patient. Therefore, the difference between Florence Nightingale’s Environmental Theory and Watson’s Theory dealing with the concept of environment is that Nightingale’s theory is limited to environmental factors. At the same time, Watson’s is comprehensive relating other issues of the niche a person exists with the conditions around them.
