Assessment 4 Assessment Type: Group Presentation Purpose: In groups students will investigate one or more varieties of English, and comment on how they impact on the teaching of English. This assessment contributes specifically to Learning Outcomes a and c. Value: 20% Due Date: TBC in Moodle Submission: All groups – hand in PowerPoints – hard copy – or email to the tutor at the beginning of the tutorial and deliver the presentation in class during week 11& 12. Topic: Varieties of English and their impact on teaching English Task Details: Students choose a topic of their choice and prepare a presentation with 2 sections: (1) an overview of their selected variety (varieties) of English: • • the role of English, its history and use features of the variety (i.e. pronunciation, lexis, grammar and socio-cultural conventions) (2) the implication for English language teaching. This may include (but is not limited to) the following considerations: • The local context and student needs • The role of the selected variety in education • Endonormative, exonormative or a lingua franca approach • The role of textbooks • Considerations for teacher training The presentation should also include: - An introduction and rationale for topic selection & a conclusion A review of current literature on the selected topic (can be incorporated into sections 1 & 2) A reference list Time for Questions and Answers Visual aids Research requirements: students need to support their analysis with support from a minimum of 6 suitable, reliable, current and academically acceptable peer-reviewed journal articles and other sources as indicated by the lecturer/tutor. Presentation: 15-20 minute oral presentation for a group of 2 students (or a 20-25 minute presentation for a group of 3 students) in class supported with appropriate visual aids.
