Introduction

The visual elements are the building blocks that artists use. When thinking about a work of art, thinking about each one of these things, how the artist in question uses them and what that seems to express, is a good place to start. As you explore the visual elements of art, you will begin noticing them all around you and how they affect your visual environment each day.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1. Describe the different qualities that line might possess (CLO 1, 2, 3)
2. Differentiate between Shape and Mass (CLO 1, 2, 3)
3. Describe the ways in which artists use light to represent space and model form. (CLO 1, 2, 3)
4. Explain how color might be used both in representational painting and as a symbolic tool. (CLO 1, 2, 3)

Directions 

Part 1

1. Identify your museum trip itinerary details:
   1. Where you will be visiting.
   2. The timeline/date(s) of your visit(s).
   3. Your chosen artwork to observe.

Part 2

1. For this second part, you will need paper, pencil, colored pencils, and scissors. You can use this worksheet

   

    or use your own blank piece of paper at home. 
2. Watch the provided video and follow the steps of the different elements of design on your own piece of paper.

Part 3

1. Take a picture of your completed paper to submit along with your reflection of the following:
   1. Observe the room you are currently in.
   2. List as many of the 7 elements of design do you notice right away? 
   3. Using detailed and vivid wording, explain how these elements are used within the design and/or decor of the room you are in?
   4. How can analyzing the elements of design in artwork help you to understand the art piece and/or the artist more throughout this course?
