It is possible to learn about another culture without learning stereotyping

Nursing

It is possible to learn about another culture without learning stereotyping. Understanding and acceptance of socio-cultural differences prevents stereotyping from taking place. “The challenge for nurses in an increasingly diverse world is to understand the risks of ethnocentrism-that is, making judgments, often negative, about another’s cultural tradition or belief because it is not a part of the one’s own” (Jarvis, p 178. 2020). Recognizing their own background and valuing the cultural differences of the patient setting it aside allows a culturally competent nurse to avoid stereotyping. Not everyone around you shares the same beliefs as you.

Stereotyping can be formed from groups that are unwilling to research information other than what they know. “Unconscious or implicit bias describes associations or attitudes that reflexively alter our perceptions, thereby affecting behavior, interactions, and decision-making.” (Marcelin, p 71. 2019). Setting one’s own beliefs aside and avoiding judgment are ways to learn about other cultures without learning stereotyping. In nursing, it is the ability of the nurse to set aside their own beliefs, values and philosophies pertaining to patient care that allows them to avoid stereotyping.
