Oedipus- Character Analysis

Regardless of his dreadful fate and horrible events that befall him, Oedipus is largely a great character. He displays a complex and well-structured character that gives the audience a chance to pity him due to his misfortune. He has great admirable attributes such as commitment, desire for justice and fairness, and being a great leader to the people of Thebes. I believe that Oedipus deserves to be King due to his admirable character and urge to do good and deliver the best judgments for the people of Thebes. He displays pure intention to help and serve the residents of Thebes in the best place possible. He deserves to lead the people of Thebes since he has their best interests at heart.

Oedipus shows courage and bravery as King as he looks towards ending the plague that faces the residents of Thebes. In order to accomplish that, he begins with a search for Laius' killer. He is determined to find the murderer in any way possible. However, in pursuit of his search for the truth despite several warnings to stop, he discovers that he is the murderer and maintains his integrity to Thebes' residents (Devereux 138). He accepts the punishment that awaits him in order to save the residents from the lurking plague. As a result, he blinds himself and goes far away from Thebes. He shows integrity and honesty as he does not try to hide the truth from the people. His acts display loyalty as the King since he sacrifices himself for the wellbeing of the people of Thebes.

Oedipus earns the people's trust by finding a solution to the riddle of the Sphinx and rescuing the city of Thebes. Due to his display of bravery and eminent courage, the residents grant him the King's position to serve, lead and protect the city. As King, he is determined to protect the residents and acts in their best interests. He showed his determination in his relentless pursuit to discover Laius’ murderer. He handles the crisis that befalls him and the city of Thebes in a wise and courageous way. He has an unending desire for truth and justice in his search for Laius’ killer. In his book, the author states, "How dreadful the knowledge of the truth can be when there's no help in truth." He also demonstrates quality character and attributes after he gouges out his eyes and exiles himself from the city after he finds out he is responsible for the murder of Laius. However, he brings himself misfortune and downfall because he insists on discovering the truth.
