Ethical need in a pediatric setting

This study is conducted to research the ethical need in the pediatric setting. The ethical dilemma and ethical challenges in the pediatric settings are identified, analyzed, and evaluated in this study. Different scholarly articles are found to study the ethical dilemma and analyze the ethical issues in the pediatric setting.

Ethical problems are common everywhere, and it is also found in the pediatric setting of healthcare. The physicians or healthcare providers find it challenging to decide that what is best for the children, and they try to prevent all kinds of complaints and criticism on their decisions. Children's healthcare is one of the sensitive issues, and the healthcare providers are extra careful while providing care to the children. Pediatric ethics requires the clinicians or healthcare providers to device the child's resistance when a planned intervention is essential to his or her welfare (Dalgo, 2018). The ethical problems in the pediatric setting include the issues of consent, and confidentiality issues.

Ethical Problem

The article chosen for this study is "Ethical Challenges Raised by OpenNotes for Pediatric and Adolescent Patients" written by (Bourgeois et al., 2018). This article includes a case of a 16-year-old girl who came to visit a pediatrician with her mother. They have scheduled the visit for the asthma problem of the girl. The pediatrician asked the mother to leave the room to conduct a confidential discussion with the child; when the mother left the room, the girl told the doctor that she was having a sexual relationship with her boyfriend and they needed birth control tips.

The ethical dilemma, in this case, is confidentiality. This scenario is found common, and there are many cases of children of this age. But the laws are different for these cases in every state. Most of the states allow the pediatricians to keep the information confidential and do not disclose it to the parents. The authors has provided the solution that the pediatric specialists should keep the confidential information of the patients with this age as disclosing information to the parents can cause serious problems. There can be another ethical problem that is consent of the parents, consent is necessary to provide the relevant care to the child.  Ethics education is necessary based on the everyday ethical dilemmas and how pediatricians can handle the situation. The pediatricians can use elements of bioethics to resolve the ethical dilemma. The elements of bioethics recognize the ethical dilemma, performing ethical analysis, and having information regarding additional bioethics resources (Ross, 2016).

Analysis of the Ethical Problem

The ethical problem of consent should be considered by the healthcare providers, and they should work to improve their convincing skills. The pediatricians should learn the elements of bioethics to take the parents of the child in trust and provide them the information on how immunization can help their child in fast recovery. They should tell the parents that there would be no side effects of using the immunization for their child instead of saying that they are unable to deliver care. The ethical problem of confidentiality should also be considered by the pediatrics (Alahmad et al., 2015). The pediatricians should honor the wishes of the child, and they should not disclose the information to the parents. However, they should provide proper guidelines and preventive measures to the child to stay away from any issues that can lead to serious health problems.

Conclusion

This study includes a discussion of ethical needs and ethical problems in a pediatric setting. The pediatricians should learn the elements of bioethics to identify the ethical dilemma, perform the ethical analysis, and possess all the information regarding additional bioethics resources. The pediatricians should keep the honor of the child's wishes and keep their information confidential, and do not disclose it to their parents.
