Directions in Film

Be sure to post it in MS Word. You may send it to me on Canvas e-mail as well for back up reasons, and you may also cut and paste into the box on Canvas. But you *must* attach it in MS Word. If it won’t open, it will receive a 0.

Format: Double-spaced, Times New Roman or Calibri 12 font, 4-6 pages, 1” margins. Give your essay a descriptive title and italicize film and book titles.

Possible approaches—choose ONE and label your essay with it, ex.

yourlastname choice1. No label means deducting .5 immediately from the grade:

Choice 1: As Shohini Chaudhuri establishes in Contemporary World Cinema, international films from Europe, the Middle East, East Asia, and South Asia often are co-produced with another nation, such as France. Additionally, many of these countries were previously colonized by others in their region, such as the English, French, China, Russia, or Japan and, therefore, have influences on their cultures that are not original to their own. American culture (and representative international corporate conglomerates) has had a heavy emphasis on these regions as well. Regarding contemporary filmmaking, one might ask, as do the people of some of these nations, “Is this film really representative of its country?” Using two of the films we have discussed since 1989 (i.e. past the time limit of the last essay), come to an argument regarding your films and authenticity based upon readings/lecture about the region. For instance, you might argue that, although Wadjda and Ghost in the Shell are co-produced with other nations, they demonstrate particular concerns of Saudi Arabian and Japanese filmmaking, respectively. You then would establish who the films were made by and how they illustrate concerns particular to their nation or region--discussing Middle Eastern filmmaking in general in relation to Wadjda since there is no chapter or section on Saudi Arabia particularly. Or you could argue just the opposite: the two films, in valuing independence and freedom, illustrate the influence of the West on the filmmakers and thus they are not authentically from their countries. Here, you also would establish your knowledge of the general concerns of filmmaking or culture in that country and how they are different from or similar to (or a mix of both) those illustrated in the film. Be sure to cite particular pages from the text and/or lectures.

Choice 2: Concentrating on Moana and Black Panther, come up with an argument to make about these films, Disney, and representation.

Demonstrate your understanding and completion of the readings associated with these two films, being sure to cite the authors you are using. Is Disney just appropriating and misrepresenting Pacific Islander culture? Is it exoticizing Pacific Islander and African cultures and using current interest in multicultural representation? Is it providing much needed multicultural representation, including gender representation? Is it valuing Afrofuturism and the abilities of African peoples and the diaspora? Are comic books the best way to value people who embody difference? Don’t just answer these questions in order but consider them when creating your argument.

Choice 3: Analyze two of the following in relation to female representation

(and they cannot both be American):  Moana, Black Panther, Wadjda, Run Lola Run, Ghost in the Shell, Monsoon Wedding. How is gender important to these films? Does their different country origin matter (and why or why not) to a discussion of gender? How are the films marked by both gender and nationality? Don’t just answer these questions in order but consider them when creating your argument. As with the other choices, use the readings/lectures to back up your points. And have a thesis.

Important Notes: All of these essays should place the films within their context as discussed in assigned readings and lectures,

including Contemporary World Cinema. You should cite our readings and show that you, most basically, have done the reading and watched the films in totem (i.e. completely). Any research done, and this includes our readings, should be cited both in the text of your essay and at the end in a Works Cited page. (MLA format will be used.) This includes director commentary, websites, other textbooks, scholarly essays, etc. (You should use only good critical sources.)
