Population Identification and Problem Statement • Briefly identify the population you have chosen that interfaces with communitybased criminal justice supervision. For example: Women, Women of color, Youth or Trans-youth , individuals involved in Domestic Violence circumstances, Aging/geriatric populations, Veterans, etc) • • After you have identified your target population you must provide evidence that this population has a problem that needs intervention You can do this by: presenting information on the severity of the problem with statistics of heightened rates of increase or continued population disparities; discussing researcher/scholarly opinions on this being a critical social problem For example: the rates of women interfacing with the CJ system has increased making their reintegration important to study. In fact, women are being locked up for non-violent crimes at higher rates than their male counterparts. *Section 1 should be approximately 1 - 2 pages II. Contributing factors • What factors have contributed to this population interfacing with the criminal justice system and why does it matter for us to address it For example: research points to past trauma and violence, lack of gendered services/support; cooccurring mental health problems that have shaped women’s engagement with crime, over-policing, community disintegration etc. • Why must we address their needs as they reenter society and interface with community-based supervision programming? (You could do this by linking it to other undesirable outcomes) For example: reentry problems for women have been linked to their future homelessness, future problems with their children (child delinquency) and continued family dysfunction making it an issue to address etc.. *Sections 2 should be approximately 2 pages (with about two factors explained) Now that you have identified your population of interest, have discussed the factors contributing to their incarceration and have discussed other problematic consequences let’s discuss SOLUTIONS!!! III. • • Discussion of Intervention Describe an intervention, a type of treatment OR a therapeutic programming What are its aims; How has it targeted your particular population? What are the components of it?(length of program/treatment, characteristics of program, describe what does it entail) (We will be discussing different kinds of interventions in class such as Wilderness Program , Multisystemic Therapy with families, Cognitive behavioral therapies, interventions in prison for veterans, Restorative Justice interventions--- that you may want to consider) Section 3 approximately 1- 2 pages IV. • Benefits and Cons to the Program What are the benefits of your identified intervention/treatment? (how could it help your population) • What are the cons of it? (meaning what kinds of challenges may arise when utilizing this intervention with your population?) • Are there ways of possibly improving it or better tailoring it to the needs of your population? Section 4 approximately 1 page • Please Note: You must use at least 5 DIFFERENT sources to write this paper. (Pick a program that there is research on so that you can discuss it; that will be critical for your paper.) We will discuss examples of interventions throughout class that you can apply to your target population and engage in more research around. • Please Also use APA format. (You should have a reference page). You can use BOTH peer-reviewed articles and reports BUT at least 3 of the sources must be empirically-based peer reviewed articles.
