Background

Founded more than 30 years ago by Nigel Austin, The Cotton On Group is now one of Australia's largest retail chains and private companies. The group controls seven brands (Cotton On, Cotton On Kids, Cotton on Body, Rubi, Typo, Factory and Supre), operates more than 1,500 stores across 18 countries and has a growing online retail presence (IBISWorld, 2020).

 

Question 1 – Strategic Management Research Report (50 marks) (Maximum report length: 2,000 words)

You have been commissioned by the senior management of the Cotton On Group to prepare a research report on the future strategic positioning of one of the group's brands of your choice (i.e. Cotton On, Cotton On Kids, Cotton on Body, Rubi, Typo, Factory or Supre). As part of your research report, you must provide the following:

1. A brief overview of the nature, history and current strategy of your chosen brand (5 marks).

2. A detailed overview of your chosen brand's environment using Porter's Five Forces Model (25 marks).

3. An overview of your recommended strategy for your chosen brand for the next two years. This recommendation should: (a) be clearly linked to your prior analysis in requirements 1 and 2, (b) include examples to illustrate how it could be implemented, (c) include two strategic objectives, and (d) include two key performance indicators for each objective (10 marks).

4. An overview (with examples) of how cost-volume-profit analysis tools could support the evaluation of the appropriateness of your recommended strategy (5 marks).

Using APA referencing, this report MUST be supported by reference to a range of relevant academic and other research sources. It is not sufficient to refer only to sources from the Cotton On Group (5 marks for academic writing).

When asked to present your discussion in report form (i.e. Question 1), you must:

  • Provide a brief executive summary.
  • Include a table of contents.
  • Structure your report to include introductory, body and concluding sections. Use appropriate headings and sub-headings as relevant sign-posts.
