Today's reading involves the following 9 roles: Giles CoreyJohn Proctor, Francis Nurse, Elizabeth Proctor, Reverend Hale, Cheever, Mary Warren, Herrick, and a narrator.  Organize into groups of no more than 9 students for today's section of Act II which begins on line 866 of page 498 continues through the end of Act II on page 503.  Answer the following questions as you read.

3) Explain how Hale’s reaction seems to show an inconsistency between his gut feeling and what he has convinced himself to be possible because of a blind trust in the court. (page 498)

4) Explain the evidence based upon which Elizabeth is arrested. Include why Cheever is looking for the thing he is looking for. (pages 499-500)

5) Mary Warren says "Why, I meant no harm by it, sir."  Do you trust Mary Warren's role in this is innocent or perhaps naive, or do you think she is deliberately trying to help Abigail?  Explain.  (page 500)

7) Hale attempts to calm Proctor while offering his own take on the situation in lines 1205-1235.  Explain what Hale is saying to Proctor about Elizabeth, Abigail, the arrests, and the confusion.  Does this give you confidence that Hale will seek the truth or concern that he cannot be trusted?  Explain in a minimum of 20 words.
