2021 The Crucible Act III, part 3

Today you will read the last part of Act III.  Start with the parenthetical information (part in parentheses) on line 1030 at the bottom of page 518 and read through the end of page 525.  Big things are going to happen at the end of this trial.  There are 14 different roles in today's reading.  Answer the questions below as you read.

narrator, Danforth, Abigail, Mary Warren, Mercy Lewis, Proctor, Hathorne, Susanna Walcott, Herrick, Francis, Parris, Cheever, Elizabeth, Hale

Immersive Reader in Microsoft Forms allows you to hear the text of a form title and questions read out loud while following along. You can find the Immersive Reader button next to the form title or questions after activating this control. You can also change the spacing of lines and words to make them easier to read, highlight parts of speech and syllables, select single words or lines of words read aloud, and select language preferences.

1) List the students reading in your group today with their roles in parentheses. For example Bob Smith (Parris & Susanna), Jane Doe (Tituba & Ms. Putnam), Sally Sue (Narrator), and Michael Scott (Abigail & Putnam).  If you are making up this assignment by yourself due to being absent, please indicate that instead.

2) What do Abigail and the girls start doing in the courtroom to taunt Mary Warren? (bottom of 518-519)

3) How does Proctor shock everyone in the room, and why is it so significant that he does this?  (page 519)

4) Earlier Proctor made the statement that Elizabeth “will never lie.” Explain how these words prove to be an example of irony and foreshadowing. (page 521)

5) What two additional things do Abby and the girls do to taunt Mary Warren and shift the scrutiny away from them to her? (pages 521-524)

6) How does Mary finally stop the girls and Danforth from tormenting her?  (page 524)

7) Despite having the court on her side, how might the events of the trial now create a problem for Abigail? (pages 524-525)

8) Why do you suppose that Proctor says what he does at the end of this bizarre trial?  (page 525)

9) Reread Hale's words in lines 1250-1263 (page 521), line 1458 (page 524), and lines 1495-1500 (page 525).  What has Hale come to realize?  What do you think he will do in Act IV as a result of this?  Explain.
