However, the longest ever recorded lifespan of the naked mole-rat is more than twenty-eight years. Scientists like Tzuhua and Rochell (2021) believe the rat's unusual longevity is the key to human evolution and long lifespan. The naked mole rat's (NMR) long lifespan can be attributed to their insusceptibility to terminal illnesses like cancer and the lack of tissue damage due to aging.
There is about a 93% similarity of the NMR genome to the human genome. Therefore, this level of high synteny shows a strong possibility of similarity in functionality to humans. NMR has abnormally high levels of myeloid-to-lymphoid (MTL) ratio. High ratios of MTL are associated with preventing leukemia. NMR also lacks natural-killer (NK) cells that defend against viral cells and can cause malignant growth. The rats also have a high pro-inflammatory cytokine production in macrophages, which fights tumors and prevents asthma and arthritis caused by the rat's environment. The novel LPS-responsive neutrophil subset (LPS) also helps the NMR defends against pathogens and harmful microbes.
