Advanced Registered Nursing

The issue of public health stretches across different dimensions touching different people regardless of their social status. However, studies show that minority groups, particularly blacks are often susceptible to health disparities. SubsequenteThis is associated with the high poverty rates among the minorities. According to Taylor (2019), 20% of the minorities in the US have access to quality healthcare insurance. I have identified the Black and Hispanic community within my area where the services of an ARN are important because they are a vulnerable group who require access to quality healthcare services. Studies show that with the minority groups, access to health insurance and, in particular, access to healthcare services is limited (Sohn, 2019). As such, there are no health practitioners to provide quality healthcare services such as diagnosis, treatment and management of patients, and midwifery services. The limited access to health services, in my opinion, results in increased mortality rates in these minority communities.

As an advanced registered nurse, my domain of operation exceeds beyond providing services to the public. The role of an ARN is to provide both diagnostic, treatment, and patient management (Ko et al., 2019). Therefore, the role of an ARN, in this case, is to provide access to quality services that will result in a healthier population. My interest, in particular, is with midwifery services as there is often a high infant mortality rate within the minority community. In addition, as the minority community have the highest poverty rates, there is an increased possibility of STIs within the community brought about by risky behaviors such as prostitution. An ARN, therefore, has the role of sensitizing the public on the importance of safe sexual practices, organizing mass sensitization campaigns, and also provide counseling services to patients.

With the growth of diversity among the minority population comes to the issue of health equity. Minority populations often have limited access to quality healthcare as little to no attention is paid to this population segment. Furthermore, there are a limited number of professionals from these traditionally disadvantaged groups, which often limits the capacity to which these professionals can provide services to the minority group. Therefore, creating policies that make it easy for minority groups to access healthcare services will go a long way toward increasing health equity in the minority population.
