Service" at the Donut Shop

Early one morning Harry found himself hungry, alone, and lost in the land of no customer

service as he stumbled into a donut shop. It was a rainy, gray morning and he was tired.

Cars were parked at odd angles because the lines on the lot had long ago faded. The parking lot was dirty and the trashcans overflowed. Inside were disorganized lines of people, most wearing parkas, waiting to buy donuts. There appeared to be no systematic way of serving customers. The bold ones stepped up and demanded service while the more timid (or courteous) hoped for attention from the clerk. Harry waited for about seven minutes as the two clerks repeatedly took orders, disappeared into the back room, reappeared, and took peoples' money. All along Harry observed the uncleared, coffee-stained counter where he soon would sit to eat his donut. It hadn't been cleared recently, and it apparently wasn't going to be cleared now. Customers groaned, as the advertised two-for-one sale did not apply when they ordered donuts of different prices, and the clerks explained with bored, unsmiling expressions. Harry noticed a middle-aged woman (could she be the manager?) sitting on a crate just outside the back door smoking a cigarette and reading a tabloid newspaper. She seemed oblivious to the dismal scene in the shop. Harry finally reached the head of the line and came face to face with a 17-year-old girl who had been condemned to serve him. Something in her teenage face told him that all was not well in the service economy. Harry asked her how she liked her job. She looked him straight in the eye and said, "It sucks!"

You are the owner of a popular cinema in downtown New York that needs

refurbishment. You could decide against refurbishment and let the cinema become increasingly dilapidated. In this case, there would be a payoff of $0.
Alternatively, you can invest in a major refurbishment that will cost you $1,000,000. You expect the major refurbishment to lead to increased visitor numbers. You have employed a consultant who estimates that undertaking the major refurbishment could yield returns (payoffs) between $600,000 and $3,000,000. The assigned probabilities to these payoffs are:
·        A 70% chance for returns of $600,000;
·        A 30% chance for returns of $3,000,000.
You could also opt for a minor refurbishment due to budget constraints. The minor refurbishment could cost approximately $400,000. Naturally, the payoffs for the minor refurbishment will be lower, and are estimated to have:
·        A 30% chance to be as high as $1,500,000;
·        A 40% chance of being $400,000; or
·        A 30% chance of being as low as $150,000.
What will your decision be? To help you decide, clearly indicate the following on a drawn decision tree:
·        The root nodes
·        The decision nodes, chance nodes, and branches
·        The terminal nodes
·        The expected payoff of each decision
·        The EMV of the decision
Drawing your decision tree:
You may draw your decision tree by hand, take a photo, and insert it into this activity submission document, provided that all of the above components are legible.
