If You Were the Opposite

Imagine a life as a person of the opposite gender and a different race. Let say, if you are a white male, imagine a life as a Latina or an African American woman. If you are a black female student, imagine a life as a white man or an Asian man. What kind of advantages would you have? How about disadvantages? Would you be happy to be the imagined character? Or you don't want to change anything? Use your imagination!

Expert Solution

I am a Hispanic woman, and I can only imagine how it would be like living as a White man. Being a Hispanic woman in society can get scary at times, knowing that being a female in general, there are many crazy situations that I would never want to imagine myself being in. If I was male in general, I know many things would be different. Most definitely I wouldn't be so scared to walk alone in a parking garage, or somewhere secluded, as often. Even today, sometimes I hesitate to walk my dog during the day, whereas the daytime has no effect on predators being out or other dangerous situations that can happen to women! Yes, men can be in that position as well, but it is very rare and women are seen more as a target by kidnappers/sex traffickers. Being a women, I carry pepper spray all the time with me, but even with that I do not feel 100% completely safe. If I was White male, I know I would receive a lot less hate. That would definitely be an advantage, whereas white men are not usually targeted. It has been seen everywhere that white men have it easier than African men or Hispanic men. They are treated with more respect, which I feel is unfair. Disadvantages to being a White male would be that everyone would think I am racist. Although in today's society, most white men are seen as people who do not like most outside of their race, I do believe that there are White folks who are not like the stereotype! So this would be a disadvantage because it is stereotypic and would be untrue. If I was a White male, I would not be racist to any other ethnicity, yet I know I would be looked as the opposite.
