I believe that “Don’t Withhold Violent games” by Jessica Robbins represents my position on the topic. As I mentioned before I personally don’t draw the line on violence with video games. Video games have been shown to not take a toll on a person’s well-being. “Currently there is no significant evidence that supports the argument that violent video games are a major contributing factor in criminal and violent behavior.” (Robbins, pg. 74) Video game violence is not the problem and that it is school shootings induced by trauma. The United States has the highest gun-death rates but we aren’t the largest consumer of violent video games. Only approximately 20% of school shooters reported they played video games. There is no link that shows violent media is harmful.
“When Life Imitates Video” by John Leo contradicts my argument that video games do not take a toll on a person. John mentions how in the Colorado massacre two teens used pistol grip shotguns which are the same guns you would see at an arcade game. It is also mentioned how the sounds of terror must’ve been familiar and how similar to the game Postal, they shot themselves in the head at the end. Juan and Anna would most likely disagree with my position and agree with this article. Two things informed me that Juan would disagree with me. He voted as a Republican last election and that he is Desert Storm veteran. Typically, Republicans are supportive of gun control but with less rules attached. They strongly support their right to bear arms and if school shootings affected their rights Republicans like Juan would say video games don’t affect children. As a veteran, Juan is already trained to use a gun and most likely uses his leisure time outdoors shooting at deer’s. Anna would agree with this article because she was raised in a rural part of Virginia. In Anna’s area most people own guns to protect against wildlife so she is already use to being around a gun. Virginia gun laws are less strict compared to other states where in Virginia you can open carry without a permit at 18 years old.
