CONnotation is how the word feels in casual CONversation, and DEnotation means the DEfinition. So, if I say "I am hot" - the denotative meaning is that my temperature has risen. However, depending on the conversation, I could be talking positively about how I look. As such, "Hot" has a positive connotation, but "balmy" does not.
