About 200 bases of DNA are involved with each nucleosome.

These include 147 base pairs that are wrapped around the core plus some linking DNA that connects to the next nucleosome.

This arrangement looks like beads on a thread.

The nucleosomes coil into a solenoid structure with about six nucleosomes per turn.

The solenoid structure then coils to form a long, thin, hollow tube of packed nucleosomes called chromatin.

The chromatin is then looped and further packaged into tightly packed chromosomes.
