In a simple sentence with the pattern Subject-Linking Verb-Predicate Noun/Adjective, there can be no direct object.

However, in complex sentences, there can be an indirect object. Ex: Raul is the man who gave me reason to live. predicate noun: man (part of the independent clause) action verb: gave direct object: reason indirect object: me Note: "who gave me reason to live" is part of the adjective clause describing "man".
