Topic 1: Revision Revision is an important part of the writing process — in some ways, it might be as important as the drafting process. What techniques do you use when revising your work? What approaches do you implement to revise your writing in terms of grammar, style, and transitions?

Revising your work is perhaps the most important part of writing. Also revising your writing is an area of writing that almost everyone dreads. The main reason is that it is difficult to revise your own work. One cannot always see the grammar and transition errors that they write. Some else must look over you work with fresh eyes to spot grammar errors, clarity and to look at your work without writer’s bias. However, there are techniques that are useful in making revisions simpler. Each writer must have their own techniques and approaches to revising their work.

The techniques that I use to revise my work are simple and I have been using them for almost my entire educational career. The first technique is to have someone else reread my work and put in their edits. Research has shown that getting corrective feedback reduces grammatical errors (Truscott & Hsu, 2008). The second is to read my work out loud, record it and listen to it. The third is to wait a day read over it again. That way I can spot errors that I would not have seen the previous day. The approaches I use are also common and simple. I also look through the thesaurus to reduce my use of common words and to increase my vocabulary in my work. I also use writing centers and the resources that they provide. One area that I use is the transition assistance because that is where I always need revision. According to Andrews and Pytlik (1983) one of the most common errors is the lack of transitions.

My general process for revision is just reading over and over until I am comfortable with the paper. I, as others it appears, believe that revision may be more important than any other portion of the writing process. I typically write in a stream of conscious sort of way, and one of the challenges that I have is making the tense and style the same throughout, so the revision process very important. When reviewing my work, I read and re-read each sentence first looking for any obvious grammatical and syntax errors and to ensure that the citations are in the right places. For me this is a difficult process but ultimately it makes for a paper that is easier to understand.  Once I have made it through the document once or twice, I read focusing on transitions and ensuring that there is a good flow throughout the paper.

Once I think I am complete with my paper I put it away for at least a few hours, if not overnight.  I do my best to step away and try to completely divorce myself for the paper.  After by mental break I read it once again to see if I am still happy with it. I find that removing myself from the paper for a while helps to recenter and clear my mind.  If I am still happy with the paper as it stands than I sill submit it. If not than I begin the process again.

Topic 2: APA Format and Citation Style APA format is important to follow in both informative and persuasive writing. Post a paragraph from your Unit 2 paper demonstrating your use of APA format. Below the paragraph, include the reference list for the sources you have cited. This will be an opportunity to review APA format and offer each other suggestions on proper citation.

The National Response Framework (NRF) is the cornerstone for a “whole of nation” approach to emergency response activities throughout the country; and the bedrock for the NRF is the National Incident Management System (NIMS).  The goal of the National Incident Management System is to create a scalable, flexible, and adaptable system for emergency managers throughout the country. “President George Bush’s Homeland Security Presidential Directive 5 declared NIMS and ICS as the unifying programs for incident management” (Seibel, 2016, p. xv).  State, Local, Territorial, and Tribal jurisdictions are encouraged to adopt the objectives of NIMS and provides stakeholders across the whole community with shared vocabulary, systems, and processes and ensures their respective communities are able to respond in the event of an incident. As Jensen and Youngs (2014) stated “Compliance is a prerequisite to receive various forms of disaster-related funding from the federal government. Consequently, governmental entities are required to self-report compliance levels within their jurisdiction” (p. 363). The component organizations associated with DHS have helped develop and implement NIMS throughout their respective administrations and subsequently throughout the country.

The 9/11 attacks have transformed the United States. They have had a major impact on the American psyche, much as the attack on Pearl Harbor had on the America of a half century earlier (Zakheim, Dov S. 2011).  There is some evidence that there is “a link between Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and depression experienced by New Yorkers who viewed the graphic images on television. The vivid, horrific images from 9/11 provide another reason why Ground Zero (and the surrounding area) is an extremely unique place: It captures an indelible image of time and place of tragedy” (Miller, E D. 2011). There was also a huge impact “on the country’s economy, (which was over ten times worse than the cost of the physical destruction), directly affected the ability of displaced workers to find new jobs directly affected the ability of displaced workers to find new jobs” (Precin, P. 2011).
