Allegations of sexual misconduct have been heavily reported in the news in the past few years

Sociology

Allegations of sexual misconduct have been heavily reported in the news in the past few years.  Political figures, Hollywood actors and directors, corporate CEOs, news reporters, and even Massage Envy franchises have all faced accusations, scrutiny and repercussions.  If you type the phrase sexual misconduct in an internet search engine, many articles and opinion pieces will show up.  Another topic of interest is the #metoo campaign.   The hashtag is an ongoing social media campaign to post accounts of sexual harassment and assault.

The phrases harassment, assault, consent, and coercion are mentioned and defined in Chapter 14.  This website  provides legal definitions  https://definitions.uslegal.com/s/sexual-misconduct/ (Links to an external site.)

More people are coming forward sharing their stories and accounts.  Opinions vary on these accounts.  The topic of sexual harassment and misconduct is a complex issue to discuss.   Is the predator to blame? the victim? was it assault? was it consensual?  was it a false accusation?  What about when several people come forward with similar stories about the same person?   Is it an idea that pursuing one’s sexual imperatives take precedence over workplace rules, lines of power or even just appropriate social behavior is what allows predators to justify sexual harassment and assault?  These are just a few of the thoughts and comments when discussing sexual misconduct.

Based on the readings and  internet searches, what are your general thoughts on this complex topic.  A few sentences are fine.  And for this discussion you do not need to comment on your classmates' posts.

Sexual misconduct has been happening since the beginning of time. It is unfortunately something that is very common and can occur to anyone. I believe that the predator is always the one to blame no matter their upbringing. So many people like to blame parents for the way rapists act. However, I believe that you can have a horrible childhood and still not do horrible things to others. I always believe the victims and I think that is important. Yes, sometimes there are false accusations and people like to say "that's why you should not believe everyone", but that is incorrect. I believe that, that statement causes victims to not speak out because they are afraid that people will think they are lying. It also scares victims to not speak out because rapists sometimes get away with their crime. The rapist gets to walk free while the victims deals with PTSD, feelings of unworthiness, fright and so many other negative feelings. Rape cases should be taken more seriously and rapists deserve longer sentences.
