Sociology

The idea of nature vs nurture is based on if certain aspects of behavior are a product of either inherited (i.e. genetic) or acquired (i.e. learned) characteristics.  Gender identity is a person's own sense of femaleness or maleness.   The nature versus nurture with regard to gender identity  debate is about whether a person is (to quote Lady Gaga) "born that way" or is a product of their cultural experience and upbringing.

Nature is what we think of as pre-wiring and is influenced by genetic inheritance and other biological factors. Nurture is generally taken as the influence of external factors after conception e.g. the product of exposure, experience and learning on an individual.

Using the material presented in Chapter 4 and your own ideas, do you have opinion one way or another on this debate?  Do you believe it is genetics, or environment or maybe a little of both that shapes a person's gender identity?  Why do you think this?  Defend and support your answer.

I think its genetics and sometimes the environment we live in that causes the decision of a persons gender or identity. For example gender role conformity is learned gender role through cultures which is learned behavior. So an individual din`t get a choice in the matter. Sex chromosomes identifies as the genetic sex but a person as an individual can choose gender identity and be whatever sex they choose. I really think its a 50/50 draw with Nature vs Nurture.
