Answer both of the following questions, using only references to Hansen/Curtis, the Reflections, and my Commentaries

History

Answer both of the following questions, using only references to Hansen/Curtis, the Reflections, and my Commentaries. Cite, when relevant. In-text citation should be sufficient, because you aren’t using outside sources for this (unless they are the ones included in the Reflections).

In your answers, state your position as clearly and completely as you can, making use of specific historical evidence from this semester.

1) Some people argue that globalization is new, having only really started since the Industrial Revolution (circa 1750 CE). Others argue that it started with the merger of the eastern and western hemispheres (i.e. the Columbian Exchange). This semester, we’ve seen how there are earlier potential dates and processes when we could say globalization began.

What’s your view? When did globalization begin?

Pick one event from our class this semester, anything from 10,000 years ago until the 16th century and explain why that event could qualify as the starting point for globalization.

Your answer should be 1-2 paragraphs in length.

2) Our semester essentially started with movement – with people leaving the place of their development and then settling across the planet. When they hit particularly habitable pockets of the globe, they settled down; they created cultures, governments, and systems of social reproduction, and then they expanded, running into each other in peaceful and confrontational ways.

Given all the diversity of language, cultures, religions, and traditions we’ve seen this semester, explain why empire was the most common form of government.

Your answer should be 1-2 paragraphs in length.
